I’m not sure if you found your answer ever, but I use split tunneling with PIA. I found the set up online, so I can’t take credit for the set up or brains that came up with it. But basically, you create a vpn user, and everything that the user touches is sent over the vpn, but only what is sent in the users name. Every other packet is sent over the unencrypted network. Im having the same issue. Split Tunneling does not work unless I disable MBAMs Web Protection. I also get no notification of something being blocked. Nor does adding PIA or Microsoft Edge (the application I have set to ignore the VPN) to the exclusion list in MBAM seem to make any difference.
